Ah, the good old days…

I remember way back when. It was 1981 or so… bought a house in San Francisco. The lender was SO happy that he could give me a 14.75%, 15-year loan! What a deal. Well, I hear lots of noise about how single-family mortgage rates are SO high… Just a little info to help set a benchmark about current rates.

The FHLMC 30-year fixed rate data on-line goes back to April 1971. Over the 52+ year span, the average 30-year interest rate was 7.74%. It hit a low of 2.65% in January 2021 and a high of 18.63% in October 1981.
