I tend to look up. It’s better than tripping over cracks in the sidewalk. Plus, hey, don’t want to break your mother’s back. So, even with that said, I do look down every once in a while. I usually find textures or patterns that are appealing. Here are a few.

Job growth continues in the nine-county region. It does appear to be cooling off a bit. The core West-Bay Counties are still out-pacing the counties with more traditional employment characteristics.
What’s worrisome? Well, growth appears to be high-tech (one sector) dependent. Many other jobs are being formed in health care and social services. Service jobs won’t keep this market vital. Other sectors of the economy and non-core communities are not sharing in the rapid growth. High-tech manufacturing employment is way down in the Silicon Valley.
What is also worrisome? Housing prices make new all-time highs… but it’s spotty. Lending? The Fed is imposing additional capital requirements on the 8 biggest banks in the country. So what? That means less free capital which equals less lending at a time when the economy is really just barely getting along. Not to worry… the “alternative lenders” are stepping into the breach. Oh, my! Don’t worry. Take my escalator app to nowhere. It’s free of charge and always will be! (At least until we run out of venture capital since we can’t “monetize” this silly app.)

I asked Grandkitty Otis what he thought of the June Median Home Price Trend for the San Francisco Bay Area.
It’s July 17th: Just over half way through the year. If I could photograph the first half of the year it would be an interesting comparison with what the second half might look like. Ben Huberman threw down a challenge to exhibit a photo expressing two clear halves. As simple is usually too tough a challenge for me, I’m including a few more halves. Here’s a typical late summer day strolling along Crissy Field in San Francisco. Choose which half you prefer.

How does color influence a door? I dunno… a door is a barrier to entry. If it’s colorful, it’s attractive. Perhaps, making the idea of entry more attractive. What good is that if I can’t get in?

April saw a pretty goodly-sized bounce in Bay Area median home prices. May, well, in May the wind blew from the east and knocked the figure down a little.
If you’re visiting the Bay Area, be sure to check out the late afternoon or sunset at Mussel Rock Park in Daly City. You will be standing on the San Andreas Fault and the epicenter of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, get a great view of Pacifica to the south and, sometimes, see a lovely sunset. It all depends on which way the wind blows (and how far out the fog bank is that evening).

Say Good-Bye to Candlestick Park!
The trend splitting the Bay Area continued this month but with a little less vigor. The four “high-tech” counties that ring the western, eastern and southern edges of the San Francisco Bay continue to see strong employment growth. The five northern and far eastern counties have seen employment flatten or trend downward.
Alameda, San Francisco, Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties have seen employment growth of between roughly 4% and 9% over the past six months.
Their low-tech cousins in Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Sonoma and Solano Counties have seen an average decline in employment of -1.19%.

When I think of the colors of the rainbow I hear the word rainbow and I think Judy Garland. I don’t always think in straight lines.
Somewhere over the Rainbow has been covered many times. Jane Monheit sings my second favorite version of the classic from the Wizard of Oz. Roberta Gambarini has a wonderful version, too. Judy, though, brings one simple thing to the original song version… her innocence. It’s simple, yet elegant… charming, yet powerful. It really does stir your imagination.
